Joni was inspired on a trip to Hawaii when she glanced out her window at beautiful mountains in the distance and noticed an ugly parking lot tarnishing the view. The lyrics clearly state environmental concerns, and also how the beauty of nature cannot easily be restored once it is defaced by human development.
